Pam Harris lives in Decatur, GA, where she does her best to navigate midlife gracelessly. She leads AI insights for a consulting firm to support her lifestyle of boxing, dancing, knitting, guitaring, and basking in her beautiful communities. Pam has a husband and two incredibly resilient, brave, and intelligent daughters.
Isabelle Patel is a neuroscience graduate student at Emory University who researches how experiences shape the brain and influence its function. Before deciding to get her PhD, Isabelle engaged with her passion for science and love of learning in a different way, by working as a high school science teacher. When she is not in lab she enjoys spending time in nature as much as possible, and can often be found exploring camping or rock climbing with her husband.
Jaap de Roode is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Biology at Emory University, where he studies parasites of monarch butterflies and honey bees. He teaches introductory biology to undergraduate students, and directs the Infectious Diseases Across Scales Training Program, which trains graduate students in the study and control of infectious diseases. He has worked as a freelance science journalist, and recently published his popular-science book Doctors by Nature: How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves.
Nicki Salcedo has a degree in English and Creative Writing from Stanford University. She loves science and science fiction, particularly Star Trek. Though she wrote poetry in college, and she also took Observational Astrophysics in hopes of glimpsing the Enterprise. These days, she works in health care tech. At night, she writes. Nicki is the author of a novel and three books of essays. Her work has led to opportunities on stage, TV, radio, and podcasts. When she is not writing or gazing up at the stars, she teaches workshops on creative writing, mental health, leadership, and innovation. For fun, she enjoys romance novels, soccer, and strength training. Nicki lives in Atlanta with her four kids, four cats, and her husband.
Anthony (Tony) J. Martin is a Professor of Practice at Emory University, where he has taught classes in geology and and the environmental sciences for more than 35 years. Martin has a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Georgia and is an ichnologist, which is someone who studies modern and fossil animal traces, such as tracks, burrows, and nests, and how life has changed environments over time. He is the author of seven books, including two about Georgia-coast environments—Life Traces of the Georgia Coast and Tracking the Golden Isles—as well as popular books about traces and trace fossils, such as Dinosaurs Without Bones, The Evolution Underground, and Life Sculpted. Martin also developed and taught an online Coursera class on extinctions, Extinctions: Past, Present, and Future, co-taught a Great Courses class, Major Transitions in Evolution, and is a popular public speaker. He is a Fellow in The Explorers Club, the Geological Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Martin, his wife Ruth, and their three cats (Tao, Ossabaw, and Durga) live in Decatur, Georgia.
