Phoenix, AZ - Making the Leap

  • ASU Kerr 6110 North Scottsdale Road Scottsdale, AZ, 85253 United States (map)

Join us for an evening of true, personal stories about science that explore what happens when we take a leap into the unknown. Whether it's taking a chance, embracing change, or stepping outside our comfort zones, sometimes the biggest risks lead to the greatest discoveries. Our storytellers share the moments when they took a leap of faith and found out what was waiting on the other side.

Story Collider is proud to partner with the ASU-Kerr Gather storytelling series.

Hosted by Saad Sarwana and Raj Sivaraman.

Well-educated and occasionally serious, I run a medical clinic, but mostly I'm a concierge for family and friends, adding new adventures and sunny fun to those around me. Busy life, full heart, a bit of sass and always ready for the next big thing.

Bradley Melnik is an educator, storyteller, improviser and stand up comedian. Born in Canada but an Arizonan for more than 30 years, he has spent much of his career helping students learn through curiosity, inquiry, and the power of a good story. Although he teaches English today, one of the most influential experiences of his career came as a long-term substitute teaching 7th and 8th grade science at Bethune School in Phoenix Armed with the FOSS science curriculum and a business background, he discovered that science education could be far more than memorizing facts. Whether he's teaching, performing improv comedy, trying out new material at an open mic, or telling stories on stage, Bradley enjoys how people make meaning of the world though stories. This is his first appearance on The Story Collider.

Kathleen McGrane: I am from a big Irish Catholic family (9 ) kids. We lived in a beautiful Mississippi River town, Dubuque, Iowa. The major industries were meat packing and John Deere. The majority of the population was Catholic and Caucasian. After becoming one of the first pot smokers in Dubuque , officially recognized by the police department and narrowly escaping the mandatory 2 year prison sentence, I moved with friends to New York City. I stayed in NY from the late 60’s until 1972 when my husband and I moved to Phoenix with our baby daughter. In Phoenix I worked for the NewTimes newspaper and KDKB radio. I was involved with the Women’s Movement in Tempe and ended up accidentally delivering a baby. When word got out, numerous women started calling me to “deliver” their babies and I became the hippie homebirth midwife. After 12 years and thoroughly burned out, I went back to school while I worked as a Correctional officer at the Women’s Prison. I finished my BS degree in nursing the day before I turned 50. Went to work at Good Sam which I hated and returned to Corrections as a Psychiatric nurse in the prison Psych hospital. I retired from Corrections with a pension and have been quilting and gardening happily ever since.
